Description

Commuter rail has only recently begun to attract the attention that light rail has long had. When it became obvious that it was not going to be practical for the San Diego Trolley to be extended north all the way to Oceanside, steps were taken to build a commuter rail system.
The Santa Fe Railway was purchased as far north as the Orange County line. The three existing stations at Oceanside, Del Mar, and San Diego were used by Amtrak. Del Mar Station due to its lack of parking. It was replaced by Solana Beach Station. With the start of Coaster service five new stations were built. The stations, past and present, are as follows:
Coaster has had from the start there were peak, reverse peak, midday, and Saturday service. This contrasts with Metrolink in greater Los Angeles area which started with only had peak direction service. Coaster is operated by NCTD and is decorated in the same violet and turquoise livery.
