MUNIs Boeing LRV have never been reliable. The cars themselves have only two doors availiable for high platform use, three for low. The Boeing cars were never reliable and after only 15 years of service they had to be replaced. This contrasts with MUNI Flyer trolley buses (over 25 years), PCC cars (over 45 years) and cable cars (close to 100 years). MUNI Metro had never had the kind of service that it could have. The terminal at Embarcadero Station has only a simple crossover which severly limits the number of trains into the subway.
The Breda cars and automation were the answer to all of these problems. The Breda cars have four doors available for both high and low platforms. MUNI paid a premium for the cars with the insurance that they would be reliable. They also could run in an automated mode through the subway. This will eventually insure higher frequency of service, greater safety, and more consistent service.
